Research has consistently demonstrated that students’ academic achievement is influenced by a variety of conditions outside the school, including their physical, social, emotional and economic circumstances. Therefore, a comprehensive, communitywide approach to meeting the needs of the whole child could potentially make a significant impact on students’ educational outcomes and help close the achievement gap among student populations.
Many students do not have access to nutritious meals during the summer vacation. CSBA has developed a policy brief and sample policy to provide information to districts and county offices of education on how to sponsor a federally funded summer meal program.
CSBA and California Project LEAN have developed a resource to help districts create a comprehensive school physical activity program to ensure students receive recommended amounts of daily physical activity.
Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has signed SB 1413 to provide students with access to fresh, free drinking water in food service areas at schools. Learn more about the legislation and policies and strategies for promoting water consumption in schools.
Whooping cough (pertussis) has been widespread in California during 2010. The California Department of Public Health recommends that all Californians 10 years and older receive a booster shot against pertussis (also known as “Tdap”). Assembly Bill 354, now chaptered into California law, requires students to be immunized against pertussis.
The BOOST Collaborative & the Center for Collaborative Solutions (CCS) announce their new collaboration to provide enhanced support and lead national K-12 educators in the out-of-school time field to promote healthy lifestyles for youth.
