Innovative programs, student supports and leadership highlighted in CSBA's School Boards in Action campaign

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The California School Boards Association is recognizing school board members across the state for their leadership during the pandemic and efforts to create stronger schools for the new school year

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (August 16, 2022) – The California School Boards Association (CSBA) has launched an initiative to create a better understanding of the work school boards perform, humanize school trustees and illustrate the steps they’ve taken to support students during the pandemic and beyond. The School Boards in Action campaign shows how school district and county office of education trustees have transformed the disruption caused by COVID-19 into an opportunity to strengthen schools, increase services and expand programs for students. Through video storytelling, Q&As, feature articles, blog posts, interviews and advertising, trustees will share their personal perspectives on school district governance and what called them to public service.

The campaign aims to generate greater recognition of the complex challenges school and county board members have faced while responding to the pandemic, as well as the variety of innovative offerings districts developed for students, staff and families during a time of crisis. It provides an in-depth look at how board members navigated adverse and sometimes contentious conditions to return students to in-person instruction, jumpstart learning recovery efforts and address social-emotional needs. The campaign also offers a look at the work ahead and how trustees plan to further improve schools as California moves beyond the triage stage of the pandemic.

“We are proud of the ongoing commitment school board members display, but also realize that not everyone understands the role of the school trustee, the demands of the job, and what school boards have accomplished to increase support for California’s students,” said CSBA CEO & Executive Director Vernon M. Billy. “The School Boards in Action campaign is designed to highlight the contributions of school board members, share the tremendous work of so many school districts and county offices of education through the state, and remind the public that trustees are people, too.”
