Masters in Governance now better than ever

Redesigned modules debut in San Jose in September, Rancho Cucamonga in October

CSBA will launch its streamlined and revised Masters in Governance Program—with an updated and reworked curriculum—this fall.

Previously a two-year program consisting of nine one-day learning modules, MiG has been revised to make class time shorter and more interactive, allowing completion within one year.

Participants will complete more reading and preparation before each meeting, allowing class time to be shortened from seven hours to 3½ per module. That way, two modules can be completed in one day—or four modules in two days—reducing travel time and expense for participants. The program will continue to be offered in convenient regional locations starting in San Jose Sept 19-21 and Rancho Cucamonga Oct. 18-19. Practical follow-up activities will extend the learning beyond the workshops, and a new online library of materials will allow participants to review what they’ve learned and access additional resources.

Those who’ve enrolled in the program attest to its value. Janice Smith, from the Knightsen Elementary School District in Contra Costa County, for example, had found herself at a loss as a first-term board member faced with her first interim budget approval. She heard about MiG and enrolled in a series of modules piloting the revised program earlier this year.

“As I sat through that first module with the instructors, it all started to be accessible to me,” she said at the conclusion of the series. “It doesn’t feel like you’re going to school. It’s entertaining. It’s fun.”
