State Board displays forward-thinking mood
CSBA blog captures highlights: Future of the API, districts’ bid for NCLB waiver

Last month’s State Board of Education meeting included some “inspiring” unscripted discussions, said CSBA Senior Director for Policy and Programs Teri Burns.
“A simple report on the potential of including graduation and dropout rates in the [Academic Performance Index] turned into a wide-ranging, thoughtful and necessary conversation on the future of the API—both short- and long-term,” Burns wrote in a CSBA blog post.
State Board members also agreed to chime in on an unusual effort by a consortium of nine California school districts to receive their own waiver from No Child Left Behind requirements after the federal government denied the California Department of Education’s request for a statewide waiver.
“I admire setting a precedent and example for others, and pushing the Department of Education to be as bold as it thinks it is,” Board member Trish Williams said. Read more about both discussions—and many other topics—on the CSBA blog.
