Alignment of ELD standards, Common Core goes to SBE

California’s State Board of Education will resume its consideration of updated English Language Development Standards aligned to the Common Core State Standards when it meets in Sacramento Nov. 7-8.

At its September meeting last month, the panel heard from California Department of Education staff regarding the development process for updating the state’s ELD standards to align them with the Common Core State Standards for English-language arts, literacy in history/social science, and technology subjects.

The goal is to highlight and amplify the key language, knowledge and skills included in the Common Core that are critical for English learners, who account for nearly a quarter of the state’s K-12 enrollment, to simultaneously be successful in school while they are developing English. These standards are designed to be used in tandem with the Common Core, not in isolation.

State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson convened regional focus groups around the state this year to provide input on the ELD standards and appointed a panel of experts to develop sample standards for the State Board to consider.
