Suspension/expulsion alternatives among newest AEC topics

AEC luncheon speakers also featured; discount registration deadline Nov. 9

New sessions are still being added to this year’s Annual Education Conference and Trade Show to make it as valuable and timely as possible. A new session related to discipline policies is just one of the cutting-edge education and school governance issues that conference-goers can expect to find at AEC.

Recent reports revealed that California suspended more than 400,000 students in 2010-11, many of them more than once, for a total of 700,000 suspensions. That statistic from the state education department generated several research studies and a host of new legislation this year in an effort to keep more students in school.

To bring governance teams up to date on this critical issue, CSBA’s Annual Education Conference Planning Committee has added a session to the schedule, “Suspended Education: Policy and Practice to Address Inequities in School Discipline Efforts,” which will be presented from 10 to 11:15 a.m. on AEC’s second day Friday, Nov. 30.

Tia Martinez, co-author of one of the suspensions reports from the Center for Civil Rights Remedies at the Civil Right Project at UCLA, will join CSBA Policy and Programs Officer Betsy McNeil and local school district leaders to discuss the data and recently signed legislation affecting discipline policies, as well as to review how California compares with the rest of the nation on this issue. The panel will also provide an overview of effective alternatives to suspension being used in California schools and the tools available from CSBA that may help policymakers begin to change the culture in their schools.

Opportunities to learn and network continue throughout each day, with informative and engaging speakers scheduled at over a dozen ticketed events. AEC’s Thursday schedule, for example includes Kevin Gordon, president of Capitol Advisors Group, LLC, addressing the Small School Districts Luncheon and Assembly Member Joan Buchanan at the California Suburban School Districts Association Luncheon.

On Friday, state Treasurer Bill Lockyer will address the California Council of School Attorneys and County Counsel Association Luncheon, and recently retired San Francisco Unified School District Superintendent Carlos Garcia will speak at the Association of California School Administrators Superintendents Luncheon. Rick Pratt, chief consultant to the Assembly Education Committee, will speak at the Association of Low Wealth Schools luncheon.

The complete lineup of speakers will be announced in a forthcoming email to all registered conference attendees.
