New and First-term Board Member Institutes continue to traverse state

Some sessions paired with Brown Act, Presidents workshops

There’s still time to register to attend CSBA’s Institute for New and First-term Board Members, being offered in several locations around the state through early March.

These innovative two-day seminars are one of the best opportunities for newly elected and first-term trustees to learn about their unique role and responsibilities. Board members can sharpen their skills on effective governance, finance, human resources and student learning. Participants explore the board's role in each area and will be able to apply what they learn when they return to their respective school districts and county offices of education.

CSBA was pleased to be able to award more than 100 scholarships that covered the costs of registration, materials and breakfast and lunch for the two-day training. Funded by the Stuart Foundation, the scholarships were offered on a first-come, first-served basis. Superintendents can attend the Institute without charge if they accompany members of their boards.

Remaining dates and locations for 2012 are:

  • Bakersfield, Feb. 3-4: Marriott at the Convention Center
  • Millbrae, Feb. 10-11: The Westin San Francisco Airport
  • Los Angeles, Feb. 24-25: Sheraton Gateway Los Angeles
  • Redding, March 2-3: Red Lion Hotel

Institutes coordinated with Brown Act, Board Presidents workshops

The Institutes consist of two daylong sessions, running from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with registration beginning at 8 a.m. In Bakersfield, Millbrae and Los Angeles, the Institutes will complement another valuable CSBA training opportunity: The Brown Act: What You Need to Know. Running from 5:30-8:30 p.m., the Brown Act trainings are presented by knowledgeable attorneys who will unravel the complexities of California’s open meeting law. Advance registration is $145.

The Millbrae Institute also coincides with still another useful training opportunity for more seasoned school board members—CSBA’s Board Presidents Workshop. This training provides current and aspiring board presidents with tools for strategic leadership—tried and true, successful practices based on research and experience to help forge effective governance teams, conduct meaningful meetings and fulfill governance responsibilities in a way that focuses all district and county office efforts on improved student learning and achievement.

The advance registration fee (up to five business days before the event) is $195; on-site registration is $205. Those who register for both the Board Presidents Workshop and The Brown Act during the same weekend save $50.
