State record mixed on federal grants

California finished 16th among the 19 round two finalists in the U.S. Department of Education’s Race to the Top grant competition—too low to qualify for as much as $700 million of the $3.4 billion available—but two of the state’s school districts fared better in the $650 million Investing in Innovation grant competition.

The Corona-Norco Unified School District “Write to Learn!” program and the Los Angeles Unified School District’s “Bold Competition” program for low-performing schools each stand to receive nearly $5 million from the “i3” competition. Applicants must secure a 20 percent private match by Sept. 8.
