Votes on local bonds, state schools chief

Local voters approved 15 of 20 general obligation school bonds and five of eight new K–12-related parcel taxes in last month’s elections, according to a California Department of Education press release.
Voters also approved one community college parcel tax and extended one existing K–12 parcel tax.
Statewide, a November runoff election will determine who will succeed the termed-out Jack O’Connell as state superintendent of public instruction. Larry Aceves, a former classroom teacher, principal and school district superintendent, and Tom Torlakson, a former teacher who went on to municipal elected posts and the state Legislature where he’s currently an Assembly member, survived a 12-candidate primary election contest for the nonpartisan post.
