CSBA helping to plan center to promote community schools

The California School Boards Foundation and University of California, Davis, School of Education have received a grant from the Stuart Foundation to help establish a California Center for Community Engaged Schools.

The $50,000 grant will be used to develop the center’s core governance structure; investigate successful full-service community school approaches at the local, state and national levels; assess needs and assets at the state and local level to determine opportunities, barriers and readiness of schools and communities to develop full-service community schools; and solicit guidance, feedback and perspective about the leadership needs around community schools in California. The work began July 1 and runs through Jan. 31, 2011.

Community schools draw on a number of area partners, resources and talents to provide all children with opportunities that affluent families can give to their children, such as a high-quality education. Their multifaceted approaches include enrichment to help young people develop their talents along with services, counseling and other supports for entire families. This comprehensive strategy has been shown to improve student learning, attendance and behavior, and it encourages parents to get more involved in their child’s education, school and the greater community.
