Program Description
“We believe the catastrophic coverage was the absolute correct insurance to have had in place. It paid off on a grand scale.”
—William O. Shook, Risk Manager, Stockton USD
Accidents happen. Are your students covered?
School related injuries to students are a matter of serious concern. Everyday your schools have students participating in interscholastic sports, including band, baseball, basketball, cheerleading, football, soccer, softball, swimming, tennis, track and field, and more. And, everyday students may be at risk to injury. Whether its practice, games on campus or even travel to opponent’s games, we’ve got you covered.
To help our members best address the insurance related issues, CSBA has joined forces with California’s leading provider of student accident and health insurance. Myers-Stevens & Toohey is a full-service administrator based in Southern California that has worked closely with public K-12 schools for over 35 years.
Catastrophic coverage
One of the potential “disasters” that school districts must deal with is catastrophic injury or death occurring to students or volunteers. CSBA’s sponsored catastrophic injury coverage is very affordable (approximately $1.00/student to cover athletic injuries up to $1,000,000) and can be extended to cover all school activities including travel to and from home and school. Medical limits up to $5 million after a $25,000 deductible are available. It is an excellent enhancement to any basic student accident or comprehensive general liability program.
Key benefits
- Reduces the district’s liability exposure
- Allows students to receive the medical attention they need
- Reduces the number of underinsured or uninsured students
- Improves the district’s community relationships with the student’s family as the district assists the family in need
Other complementary plans include:
Blanket base coverage
Many students have little or no health insurance. Providing blanket accident medical coverage for all or specific student groups (e.g., athletics) can offer many advantages including: lower premium costs per student, fail safe compliance with related California Education Codes, reduced workload for staff, improved access to extracurricular activities for economically disadvantaged students and reduced liability exposure for the district. Various co-pays and deductibles are available and all options are designed to mesh seamlessly with the catastrophic program.
Voluntary coverage
These are parent purchased plans offered at very affordable rates. Options include “school-time,” “full time” (24/7), student health care plan, tackle football and long-term dental. The newly enhanced preferred provider options help minimize out-of-pocket expenses to parents. The voluntary program can be implemented on a standalone basis or, preferably, in conjunction with “basic” blanket and/or catastrophic injury coverage.
