Education Workforce Housing 101 Workshop Series: Part 1 – Southern California (3/20/26-IN PERSON)

Description

Description

CSBA's Education Workforce Housing (EWH) 101 Workshop Series, Part 1 provides local educational agencies (LEAs) with practical guidance to develop workforce housing plans. This full-day, in-person workshop takes place at a completed EWH development and focuses on the core building blocks of early exploration: understanding EWH development models, learning the end-to-end EWH process and assessing staff demand for workforce housing. This is the first in a series of three workshops.

Through a guided site tour, expert instruction and peer discussion, participants will learn how EWH projects come together, the range of development pathways available and what early-stage planning looks like. This workshop is ideal for governance teams and staff who have committed to exploring workforce housing and want to strengthen their plans before moving deeper into feasibility and project scoping. It also serves as a valuable refresher for onboarding newly elected trustees, superintendents and senior administrative staff to an existing project.

Why take this training?

As workforce shortages continue to challenge LEAs across California and impact student achievement, EWH is a strategic approach to improving recruitment, retention and long-term fiscal sustainability. The EWH 101 Workshop Series, Part 1 helps you build the knowledge and confidence needed to begin this work. Participants will develop a comprehensive understanding of what EWH projects entail, the pros and cons of various models for EWH, and how to match LEA housing demand with project vision.

Relevance to governance

Board members, superintendents, chief business officers, facilities leaders and senior administrators play a critical role in shaping the decisions that make EWH possible. Participants will gain insight into what successful LEA-led housing developments require and strengthen their ability to lead a well-informed, collaborative process to make strategic decisions at both the board and project level.

Participant benefits

Participants will leave Part 1 with:

  • A guided tour of a completed EWH development
  • A clear understanding of available EWH development models
  • An overview of the full EWH process, from exploration to lease-up
  • A demand-assessment toolkit to begin analyzing housing needs among staff
  • Case studies and examples from California LEAs
  • A curated packet of resources to support next-step conversations

Upon completing all three parts of the series, participants will receive a Certificate of Completion from CSBA.
