MIG Course 5: Community Relations & Advocacy/ Governance Integration (VIRTUAL)

Description

Masters in Governance (MIG) Course 5 │Fall Virtual Cohort

Community Relations & Advocacy | Governance Integration

Prerequisite: MIG 1: Foundations of Effective Governance | Setting Direction; MIG 2: Student Learning & Achievement | Policy & Judicial Review; MIG 3: School Finance; MIG 4: Human Resources | Collective Bargaining

Why take this training:
The representative role of school board members is central to effective governance. Effective communication techniques are vital for authentic community engagement and successful advocacy.

Part 1, Community Relations & Advocacy, explores the relationship between the board, the district and the larger community. Participants will learn the principles of effective community engagement, approaches to framing issues and practice strategies that support effective trustee-community conversations. The board’s role in the district communication plans and processes will be reviewed, including who speaks for the district and the board, and considerations for communications during crises. Finally, attendees will speak with CSBA Public Affairs and Community Engagement Representatives (PACERS) about advocacy at the local, state and federal level.

Part 2, Governance Integration, provides a holistic review of CSBA’s Effective Governance System and the integrated application of the board’s five fundamental responsibilities across all the district functions. Trustees will complete a personal assessment, identify areas for further development and create a plan for leveraging what they’ve learned in their local district.

Key takeaways:
Upon completion of this training, board members will be able to:

  • Clarify the board and individual trustee role in district communication and advocacy
  • Demonstrate practical strategies that foster transparency, responsiveness and trust within their communities
  • Articulate the critical role of advocacy at the local, state and national levels to effectively represent and protect the interests of students, staff and the district
  • Apply the components of the CSBA Effective Governance system as a theory of action to strengthen local school board governance
