CCEE conducts trial run for statewide LCFF rubric training series

The first of nine Local Control & Continuous Improvement workshops, put on by the California Collaborative for Educational Excellence, will be held on Nov. 2 at the Sacramento Convention Center, with the statewide series continuing throughout November.

Today’s “trial run” of the LC&CI workshops, also held in Sacramento, further demonstrated that these workshops will be must-attend events for board members and superintendents, as well as local stakeholders as the new Local Control Funding Formula evaluation rubrics are rolled out.

The deadline is Friday, Oct. 28 to register for the workshops, all of which are free of charge. Dates and locations are listed below, registration is available onlineWhile not necessary, all school and county board members are encouraged to attend the workshops as a team.

The workshop uses example Local Education Agency data to lead a “guided tour” through the new rubrics based on the current model of the rubric; CCEE staff highlighted certain areas where the current rubric model may change based on updates that are likely forthcoming, noting that the State Board of Education itself is also in a continuous improvement cycle with development of the new rubric.

In the morning half of the session, after providing background on LCFF and how the new rubrics fit into the LCFF/Local Control Accountability Plan picture, staff walked through details of the seven state and four local performance indicators that comprise the rubric and the corresponding five color-coded performance categories, as well as the formulas for how the performance categories are determined.

In the afternoon portion of the workshop, CCEE drilled further down into insightful guidelines and tips for how to examine and evaluate the data both at the LEA level and school level. Extensive time was spent reviewing the LEA Comprehensive report and how the data is presented across student groups for each performance indicator.
The workshops also employ an online question and answer module, accessible on mobile devices, that allows participants to submit questions online during the session; questions can be “voted up” to identify key topics. Questions can also be submitted in writing during the sessions.
