Course 4: Charter Schools
In the Charter Schools Course, participants will learn the history of charter schools along with the background information of that history. County Board of Education members will become clear about their role and responsibilities regarding approval and renewal of county program and countywide charter schools. We will talk about the requirements of and differences between county program and countywide charters, including the statutes, policies and procedures that apply. You will be armed with an understanding of the policies and processes when a charter school petition or appeal comes before your county board. You will also discuss the grounds for revoking charters, what happens if a charter becomes insolvent, and the implications and impacts of approving charters in your county. Recent legislation, finance, student learning, and facility requirements are key areas that will be explored in depth.
Each course will have pre-course assignments which need to be completed prior to attending the virtual sessions. One week before the course, participants will receive the Know Before You Go eblast Zoom links and materials download.
