CSBA Honors CA State Senator Richard Roth with Outstanding Freshman Legislator Award

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The California School Boards Association (CSBA) will honor California State Senator Richard Roth (D-Riverside) with its 2013 Outstanding Freshman Legislator award in recognition of his work to promote the interests of public schools.

Senator Roth will be honored this Friday February 7th at 6 pm in the Landis room of the Riverside County Office of Education at 3939 13th Street. The award will be presented by Josephine Lucey, CSBA president and Jesús Holguín, CSBA president-elect and board member for the Moreno Valley Unified School District.

In 2013, Senator Roth demonstrated to school board members throughout the 31st Senate District his devotion to the needs of public school students and enhancing opportunities for youth. He was an early supporter of the Local Control Funding Formula, which provides extra resources and focuses on the needs of English learners, low income students, and foster youth.

“We’re proud to honor Senator Roth for his commitment and dedication to California’s schools and students, and his partnership with school boards throughout his Senate District,” said Lucey, CSBA president and board member in the Cupertino Union School District. “Senator Roth exemplifies collaboration and representation, and serves as a great role model for us all.”

“I am honored and humbled to receive this special recognition. I thank CSBA for their consideration and will continue working hard to help ensure California’s more than six million school-age children receive the education they need and deserve,” said Senator Roth.

CSBA’s Outstanding Freshman Legislator of the Year award is presented to California legislators who demonstrate significant commitment and legislative contributions to public education; recognize and support local education governance; support K-12 legislative proposals; and have a comprehensive understanding of the education issues local school districts and county offices currently face.

Senator Roth represents the 31st State Senate District, including portions of Riverside County including the cities of Corona, Eastvale, Jurupa Valley, Moreno Valley, Norco, Perris and Riverside. Currently, he serves on the Joint Legislative Budget Committee and the Joint Committee on Emergency Management, as well as several Senate policy committees. Governor Jerry Brown appointed Senator Roth to the newly created Governor’s Council on California Military Future in March.
