Schools Show Academic Achievement, Need State Support to Continue Momentum

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

West Sacramento, Calif. – In the midst of harsh economic times and drastic cuts to education, it is easy to overlook the impressive progress and sustained academic improvements students and schools make each year. Today’s announcement that California schools had the highest advancements in the 2011 STAR results is a reminder that students, parents, teachers and staff are working diligently to ensure significant progress in student achievement.

“Year after year we have seen increased improvements in standardized test results, proof that our students have the potential to excel well beyond proficiency," said CSBA President Martha Fluor. "These gains will not continue if schools are consistently faced with increased class sizes, furlough days, staff layoffs and looming mid-year cuts."

“We must invest the resources and services required to address the diverse needs of our students and provide every child the opportunity to succeed,” said CSBA Executive Director Vernon M. Billy. “Our test scores are improving, our students are achieving, and now more than ever they need the resources and funding necessary to continue that momentum.”
